All funds raised from the March 27 showings of the “Calvin Marshall” movie will be used for polio immunization. The polio immunization effort has helped bring about a 99 percent decline in the number of polio cases worldwide. The final push is on to eradicate the poliovirus where it is still endemic in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. Since 1985 Rotary International (1.2 million members in 32,000 clubs in more than 140 countries) has spearheaded the international effort to eliminate polio. Rotary’s partners include the World Health Organization, UNICEF and nearly all nation states. Rotarians and friends are nearing $1.2 billion (including recent Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grants totaling $355 million) in fundraising for this project.” For more articles about worldwide support for polio eradication: www.rotary.org |
